Save Gandy is an effort to stop the proposed overhead expressway from being built over our neighborhood. In October 2009, THEA (Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority) is planning to have their board of directors vote on whether or not to build this overhead toll road connecting the Selmon Expressway to the Gandy Bridge. This roadway will be built down the middle of Gandy Blvd. and will not be accessible from Gandy. The local business owners and neighborhood residents, as well as the Tampa City Council and the Hillsborough County Commission, have no say so in the matter, with only the THEA board having the final say.

We at Save Gandy feel that this overhead concrete structure will very much diminish Gandy Blvd. and have a negative effect on property values, commercial as well as nearby residential. We also think the THEA vote should not take place until the FDOT (Florida Department of Transportation) safety and beautification improvements, which have been ongoing for quite some time now, are completed and some time passes so we can all evaluate the flow of traffic on the improved Gandy Blvd.

If the overhead toll road is built:

-The businesses along Gandy will lose most, if not all, of the impulse shoppers which help those businesses thrive.

-The traffic on Gandy during rush hour times will still be bad.

-Our neighborhood will be permanently scarred by an unattractive, massive overhead concrete structure right down the middle of Gandy.

-It will be mainly used during rush hour times and be sparsely used during non-rush hour times and weekends making it a heavy price for the neighborhood to pay to alleviate traffic for three to four hours each weekday.

PleaseĀ  sign our petition and voice your opinion. Hopefully a strong show of force will influence THEA’s vote and stop this project from moving forward.
